Rooftops

The mild chill of early winter and sporadic raindrops have their way of dancing you into your thoughts. Even though its chilly, as soon as you're in your head, you don't feel the cold anymore. Actually it's quite cozy. It feels like you're under control. That is how Greg felt that evening. He closed his eyes while feeling the vast emptiness in his chest, but the raindrops were poking him back to reality, urging him not to go there, not to dwell over the past. The view from his office balcony was nice, it was not astounding, but with just enough space to feel the city's breath beneath him. The red sky above him, a typical landscape of an urban jungle, painted by the orange street lights bleeding into the thick mist created from the smoke, dust and air humidity, once again seemed to him as if shielding the eyes of the city from a stellar event no one was supposed to see. Like a veil on all of our heads, at the same time protecting us, and smothering us, keeping us ...

A game of chess

Ron was sitting next to the window with a gun in his hand, when death came into the room. He was watching the wind blowing out the leaves from the street in short but powerful bursts. As death needs no permission, no doors, no keys nor locks to come in, he did not hear it enter the room, but did not get scared when he saw it either. Did not even flinch. In front of him was a chess board, all set up, white pieces on his side. "I knew you would come eventually", Ron said. "...and I felt that you would come soon". Death said nothing, just simply leaned forward towards Ron for a while,  and then moved from the other side of the chessboard, where the black pieces were standing. - "Do you play, Ronald?",death asked."Yes I do.Would you like us to play a game?" - "I am not sure that would be fair", death replied,"after all, I was there, present, when the game was invented. The match would not be very interesting". - "We could...

Dreams of a robot

Jack really liked Naomi. If it wasn't for her bright smile, for her freckles and ginger hair, for two tiny holes on her cheeks when she smiled, maybe he wouldn't like her that much.Or maybe he would, you can't really order yourself into liking or disliking someone. Feelings are not created nor destroyed by a push of a button. "Jack. Are you even listening to me?", Naomi said. "Of course I am, don't be silly", Jack replied. "Oh really? And what was I saying then?", she asked, and just as Jack was about to blunter out some educated guess about what she might have been talking about, Naomi's phone rang."Saved by the bell, huh?", she pointed towards him with her phone, and answered the call. "And maybe if there was no jealous, abusive husband, I might even stand a chance", he thought. The world just got a bit gloomier. He coiled his hands around the warm cup of coffee in front of him, cause although the sun was high, makin...

The memory shop

At some point in time, in a city built under a steep hill, during an easy-going night, a young man was walking through the empty-ish streets of the old part of the town. It was just him and the old benches in the middle of the road, keeping him company, and yet at the same time reminding him of something. Distracted by the steady hiss of the wind and a group of noisy teenagers somewhere in the distance, he was trying to remember what it was, but he couldn't. "Oh well", he thought,"it will probably come back to me. Just not now". The small shops in the old part of the city, typical for the architecture of the old Ottoman empire, were passing by, mesmerizing, hypnotizing, but still so familiar. After all, he passed by them so many times. However, just as he passed around a street corner, he made a step back,"Oops, wait. I've never seen this here before". A dim light was shining through the windows of a house not bigger then a small garage, and a boa...

The absence of light

Sometimes it is nice to sit in the dark, don't you think so? You get to relax a bit. No judgmental looks, no bright lights coming from freshly polished cars bought by the tears of crying kids waiting for their fathers to come home. No fancy dolls covered with make up, with their fancy phones, and with their air-kissing clearly displaying the disgust of mutual contact. No plastic, no fakes that cause that vomiting response in your belly for which at that moment you just can't pinpoint the reason why do you actually feel that. You don't need to look at the 100 year old creep in the suit, trying to blackmail a 25 year old secretary to go with him to a business trip. You don't witness those packs of animals devouring the socially awkward kid in the group, you don't get to see the asshole shit all over the people around him. No sharp smiles, fueled by sarcasm, smirking at you as if their hearts pump blood only for you, while actually al...

End of an era

Image
I have to admit that what I am writing right now is greatly influenced by a song from the soundtrack of BBC's series Sherlock: It is a theme of a story where Sherlock, gets introduced to Irene Adler,or as he called her "the woman". As the story goes, she was the only woman that ever tricked Sherlock, and the only one he ever really loved. However, as a series of events happen, he says farewell to Irene, lets her go, and never looks back. Now, in my opinion this is more then just a cliche love story, and as the song's chords go, I can sense a determination, a strong, conscious determination, a result of a common sense, a mind taught to rationalize and deduce conclusions, where one sees that something ended, and that looking back would just make the things worse. For you, for others, for everyone.   The worse thing that you could do after seeing that something blew up in your face is doing the same thing again.People could wonder why would anyone wan...

Things you should learn sooner rather than later

As it usually happens, we learn from our own mistakes, or as they say where I come from: "If you get bitten by a snake, you will be afraid of the tiniest of lizards".However, it is waaay better if we learn from other people's mistakes, knowing upfront that snakes have a sharp set of teeth will save you some trouble, will it not? Use that wisdom that other people gathered, trust those few good friends you have when they start telling you about snakes and how badly the snake bite hurts. That said, here are several good points from Debbie Millman, an american writer/designer, followed with some of my comments and opinions. I read these opinions of hers and I find them being a subtle example of eternal wisdom. All of the points are well worth the effort of achieving them: If you are not making mistakes, you are not taking enough risks .  True as it gets. There is no such thing as success without leaving your comfort zone. The ship is very safe when it sits in the harbo...
